Foster

We are always in need of cat and kitten fosters! Although needed all year, we have a special urgency for such fosters once the weather warms up in late winter and early spring, on through into autumn. This is when a high volume of kittens are born (we call this “kitten season”). We can only help as many cats and kittens as we can find fosters for, so you have the opportunity to save many lives. Dog fosters play an important role in our rescue. It takes patience, understanding, training, socialization and of course lots of love! If you think you’ve got what it takes, fill out our Dog Fostering Application.

Storm’s Angels Rescue simply could not survive without our fosters. They are at the heart of all we do. We do not have a physical shelter so fosters take in pets we receive into their own homes. It simply cannot be stressed how much we need and appreciate them. Can you be a foster?

What does it take to be a foster? 

You need a love of animals, familiarity with animal behavior, just a little bit of space and a willingness to help. Here’s a great article from Petfinder that may answer questions you may have: Things to Know Before Fostering a Dog or Cat.

A barrier to many potential fosters is the thought that they would never be able to give their foster animal up for adoption after becoming attached to them. Yes, sometimes that does happen, and we call this a “foster fail”! Fosters can certainly have first dibs on those they care for but most fosters find it a joy to be a stepping stone into their foster pet finding just the perfect home. That then allows them to foster a new pet who will, in turn, finds its new home!

Once received we will notify you and then begin to process your application. We will let you know if we have any issues or concerns after we have processed your application.

We welcome any level of fostering since we recognize everyone has different circumstances. Examples are:

Short Term Foster Care

Short term foster homes are foster homes used for 2 weeks or less instead of boarding animals while their current foster parents are unavailable. They require a 2 week or less commitment.

Long Term Foster Care

Long term foster homes are foster homes used for animals who need a place to stay while waiting for adoption. They require a commitment until the animal is placed into an adoptive home. Long terms fosters need to commit to training, housing and trying to find an adoptive home for their foster animal.

Forever Foster Care

Forever foster care homes are needed for special medical/behavioral needs animals that are not adoptable. They require a commitment until the animal has passed away. Forever fosters need to have some knowledge of medical/behavioral issues or be willing to learn.

What if I start fostering but my circumstances change? 

Keep in mind fosters do not sign a contract that binds them to foster for a specific period. Although we want to give our foster animals as much consistency as possible, we realize that things come up. When that happens, we will find a different foster to take in your foster animal on either a temporary basis until your circumstances allow or until it gets adopted.

Does fostering cost me anything?

Storm’s Angels provides fosters with all basic needs for any foster animal. For dogs we provide a crate, collar/harness, leash, food and any other supplies. For cats we provide a travel crate (for vet appointments), collar, food litter box and supplies. Supplies will be provided for other animals as needed. All vet costs are paid for by Storm’s Angels until adoption. Foster homes, of course, supply the vital love and attention each pet needs.

We are a small rescue so can give our fosters more personal attention. Fosters are our lifeblood and we appreciate and value them!
