Adopt Don’t Shop!
What is a barn cat? Simply put, it is an unsocialized (feral) or semi-feral cat that is placed with a caretaker to live outdoors with access to a safe shelter such as a barn, equipment bay, shed, or other outbuilding. These buildings are best located in areas where they aren’t directly next to a road or in areas where the cats can be in danger from uncooperative neighbors or traffic. Barn cats can sometimes even live in warehouses or other large work buildings in city areas where they keep to themselves while prowling for rodents. We’ll refer to all of these as “barn homes” in our website.
Storm’s Angels is always looking for barn homes! A barn home not only provides a shelter as described above, but also the care and basic supervision from a caretaker. There are steps to be taken to ensure the cats placed in this way will stay and make it their new permanent home. Many will learn to hunt and feed themselves, but as a rule food and (especially) water is made available to them.
In return, the caretaker gets a rodent-controlled shelter and surrounding property! Plus the reward that they are helping show respect and showing support for these beautiful independent cats. Although these ones will likely never thrive in a home setting, they may gradually learn to trust the caretaker and build a mutual respect.
All barn cats are spayed (females) or neutered (males) before placement. This ensures they will not reproduce and create a new problem of building a large colony. These cats are also vaccinated and checked for certain diseases which could affect other cats they come into contact with. Caretakers will be fully informed of their health assessment.
If you would like to have the company of one or more barn cats, we encourage you to do so. Simply apply for a barn cat by filling out this Application. If you have any additional questions, we’d love to address them. You can visit our Contact page or Message us through our Facebook page.
