TNR, or Trap Neuter Return, is a way to humanely control free-roaming community cats. Cats which are trapped are sterilized, ear-tipped and returned to the location they were trapped from. Socialized cats that are trapped are usually those that formerly had homes but have since been abandoned or lost over a long period of time. TNR programs will attempt to find homes for these cats as well as any kittens young enough to be socialized. The remaining cats are normally returned because they simply would not thrive in a household environment. An alternative is to place such cats into barn homes after being sterilized if such homes can be located.
TNR is a process that should be done by individuals who are either experienced or who can work in tandem with another experienced trapper. In addition, if there is someone that is currently feeding a particular community of cats they should be included in the process as well. These ones usually continue to feed when the cats are returned, something which can be I mportant to their survival.
TNR is critical to keeping the unwanted cat population in check. Outdoor living for felines is fraught with many dangers and is a less than ideal life.
Storm’s Angels Rescue assists in TNR efforts where possible. Although this is not our main focus we assist in situations where possible. We do not routinely return cats to residential areas due to safety concerns. These animals are placed in safe barn homes.
There are many quality organizations and article which educate about TNR if you would like additional information. You can follow this link to the ASCPA for more details:
